Thoughts Become Things

Any Idea that is held in the mind that is either feared or revered will begin at once to clothe itself in the most convenient and appropriate forms available.

This quote from Andrew Carnegie lets us know that our thoughts take physical form and become things. .

This is not referring to random, weird thoughts that float into our minds every now and again; this is referring to thoughts that we constantly think about, that is our dominating thoughts.

Earl Nightingale who is also known as the Dean of personal development said in one of his recordings that one point all philosophers agree on is that we literally become what we think about , they disagree on other points.

Now since our thoughts are very important and the dominating ones become reality and thus have a great impact on the quality of our lives we should take a few minutes to talk about our thoughts.

The first thing we should note is that we should not think about what we don’t want to see in our lives.

We should not let our imagination go there this is difficult because our imagination wants to go to the “What If “ land  , especially if we are surrounded by people who also dwell on the negative or we take in a lot of negative news from the media .

With disciplined thinking we can keep our mind off the negative and on what we want.

When you start employing disciplined thinking it has to be done deliberately and aggressively.

You start by monitoring your thoughts – there are two stages of thoughts affecting your actions.

1. When the thought is in your mind.

2 When the thought is affecting your emotions and feelings.

Negative thoughts produce negative feelings.

Positive thoughts produce positive feelings.

 Initially you might only be able to catch negative thoughts when it is at the second stage that is when it is actually affecting your emotions and feelings, but gradually with practice you would be able to identify a negative thought immediately it comes to your mind and switch to a positive thought.

This is where the deliberate aggressive action is called for , instead of getting involved in negative ideas or suggestions whether conceived by you or accepted from outside (friends , media) you would need to write out a list of things you want to see happen in your life.

Once you notice the negative thought either at the first or second stage immediately go to your list and start reading it, you would soon know your list off heart that you can switch thoughts immediately and insert the opposite positive thought.

A few methods I can suggest for switching thoughts from negative to positive are

  1. Literally say the word switch either out loud if you are alone or in your mind if you are in public.
  2. You can also say stop it either out loud if you are alone or in your mind if you are in public.
  3.  You can snap your fingers, signalling to yourself that you should change to positive thoughts.

You can use any of these methods or any you think about, the most important point is that you change from negative thoughts to positive thoughts as soon as possible.
